The Sox Find Unexpected Gem In Aruba!
Xander Bogaerts may be among the hottest rising stars in all of Major League Baseball, interestingly enough he wasn't the Bogaerts who the Red Sox went to Aruba to watch. Older brother, by one minute, Jair was the Bogaerts that Sox international scouts traveled to see.. Xander was strickened with chicken pox and couldn't attend the first portion of tryouts although his brother Jair impressed the scouts with his play. Jair pleaded with the scouts to give his brother Xander a try out and they agreed. Though sick as a dog Xander went to the tryout after getting the ok from his mom and had a great showing despite being ill.
The Red Sox chose to sign both brothers and put them in to the DOmincan League to see how they would fare against a real challenge. The biggest challenge for the brothers in The Dominican League was the pitching. Nearly every pitcher was throwing over 90 mph something they hadn't faced in Aruba. Xander excelled in the face of the new found obstacle Xander had a remarkable season hitting a team-high.314 with three dingers, seven doubles and five triples, 42 RBIs and 39 runs in 63 games on route to being named the Red Sox's Latin Program Player of the Year. Xanders brother Jair did not react well to the challenge of the pitching hitting a disappointing.170 in 46 games and being forced to repeat his season in the Dominican.
Once at Single-A Greenville Xander exceeded expectations ending third on the team with 16 home runs, leading all players with a. 509 slugging percentage and batting in 42 runs despite only playing in 72 games. Following a terrific 2011 campaign Xander moved up through the ranks going from Double A Salem to AAA Pawtucket. That very same year sibling Jair was dealt to the Cubs where his baseball career would come to an end After a swift rise through the minors the Sox eventually gave Bogaerts the call adding him to the 40 man roster and starting him in his 1st game against the National League Giants. Xander was among the Red Sox best players during the 2013 post season supporting in there World Series Title. While Xander was not the Bogaerts the Sox were initially trying to find he is the Bogaerts that they will be investing in for now and the years to come.
